Real Weddings We Loved: A Dreamy Butterfly Beach Ceremony and Catamaran Reception in Santa Barbara
When you imagine a wedding day so perfect it could be a postcard, Nat and Matt’s celebration at Butterfly Beach in Montecito — followed by a sunset catamaran reception in the Santa Barbara Harbor — is exactly what comes to mind.
Santa Barbara County is full of breathtaking places to say "I do," but this wedding brought together everything we adore about coastal weddings: relaxed energy, stunning scenery, and a dash of adventure.
Butterfly Beach Dreams!
The Couple’s Vision
Nat and Matt wanted their wedding day to feel laid-back, intimate, and full of the ocean’s magic. They envisioned a simple ceremony steps away from the water, surrounded by just their closest friends and family, followed by a party that felt more like a celebration than a formal event.
Butterfly Beach in Montecito was the perfect ceremony location for them. Tucked right next to Santa Barbara, this beach offers incredible ocean views, golden sunsets, and a calm, upscale atmosphere that matched their style perfectly. And because they wanted something truly unforgettable for their reception? They chartered a catamaran out of the Santa Barbara Harbor for a private sail to celebrate with their guests!
The Big Day Details
The ceremony at Butterfly Beach was absolutely magical. The tide was low, the sun beamed down warmly, and a soft breeze kept everyone comfortable.
Nat made her way down the sandy steps, walking to meet Matt, her graceful figure catching the eyes of excited locals who couldn’t help but smile at the love unfolding before them. With the Pacific Ocean as their backdrop, they exchanged vows, the simplicity of the setting enhancing the beauty of the moment.
After the ceremony, guests made their way to the nearby Santa Barbara Harbor, where the real party began. Boarding a catamaran, with the most gorgeous Santa Barbara views, Natalie, Matt, and their loved ones set sail just as the sun began its descent.
There was delicious food, plenty of drinks, and lots of dancing on the deck under a sky that turned every shade of pink and orange. Between the sea breeze, the city lights twinkling along the shoreline, and the pure joy on everyone’s faces, it was one of those nights that no one will ever forget.
Tips for Planning a Beach + Boat Wedding in Santa Barbara
Dreaming of your own ceremony in the sand and reception at sea? Here are a few tips to make your day smooth and stress-free:
Permits Matter: Some parts of Butterfly Beach (and other Ventura County or Santa Barbara beaches) require permits for ceremonies, especially if you're setting up chairs, arches, or décor. Plan ahead to secure the right permissions.
Timing is Everything: Midday can be hot and crowded. Late afternoon ceremonies are perfect for golden hour lighting and cooler temps — and they transition beautifully into sunset receptions.
Think About Tides and Wind: Beaches change a lot with the tides, and afternoons can be breezy. It's always good to have a Plan B for unexpected weather!
Boat Basics: Catamarans usually have guest limits, so make sure your headcount fits. Also, remind guests to bring layers — even warm days turn chilly out on the water after sunset.
Seasick Solutions: Ginger candies, Dramamine, and avoiding heavy meals right before boarding can help guests stay comfortable and enjoy the sail.
Hire a Planner You Trust: Coordinating beach set-ups, timing, transportation, and a private charter can get complicated fast. Having someone who knows the local area (like us!) makes all the difference in pulling it off seamlessly.
